Mikaela Laurén made a promising start against pound for pound "superstar" Cecilia Braekhus in Stokke, Norway Saturday night, but it wasn´t enough. Laurén attacked furiously from the opening bell, displaying a superb jab that caught the champion several times in the first round, and her follow up right wasn´t bad either. It jerked Cecilia´s head back repeatedly. She might even have "stolen" the first round on the judges cards by that aggressive start.
Mikaela took charge in the second as well, rocking Braekhus with a cracker of a punch but the champion took it well.. She (Mikaela) showed excellent skills guts and determination. It appeared as if she indeed could present a big challenge for Cecilia after all - Mikaela seemed strong and confident, the hope was there for sure, it was evident, "she could do this", but when the third round began everything changed, the champ stepped it up a gear or two and instantly managed to land many significant shots on Laurén, who tired visibly (round 3, 4 and 5 all went to Cecilia) and ultimately Mikaela got rammed by a big left in the sixth which resulted in a knockdown - she got up, was allowed to continue by the referee, but got overpowered by Braekhus shortly after. It was obvious she wasn´t going to let this opportunity slide, and of course she didn´t. The referee waved it off seconds after. Cecilia came through in a big way (TKO6), which wasn´t surprising, but the champion was very impressed by her challenger´s performance, expressing her gratitude towards Laurén saying it was a gutsy effort, "Mikaela can hold her head up high, she proved to be a solid challenger" she said.
