This weekend, after five consecutive losses, Romanian cruiserweight, Giulian Ilie wisely enough decided to call it a day and hang up his gloves for good - and this after 30 years in the sport and ten of those years with trainer, Wally Munteanu by his side.
The now 40-year old former junior and senior Romanian amateur champion based in Italy, who in recent years fought numerous times professionally in Sweden (where Munteanu is based) and with the mentioned trainer / manager and coach oftenly steering his career in a good way that ultimately led to him winning the vacant IBF Intercontinental cruiserweight title in Italy back in 2011.
Its been a tough ride all the way, and it´s clear to everyone that he hasn't shied away from the tough guys out there, and along the way also piled up a decent record of 21-15-2, 7 KO:s - the most recent defeat coming of course this passed weekend against undefeated Latvian prospect, Nikolajs Grisunins ( now 6-0) at his own back yard in Jurmala, Latvia - and that was also reason enough to call it quis!
The fight ended by a painful TKO in the very first round leaving Ilie and Munteanu with a bitter taste in their mouths, agreeing that this was "the end of the road" for Ilie. Professional boxing is a young mans sport and Giulian has been a part of it since 2004. A fine career for sure.
